Hope House Children’s Home—Recife, Brazil Hope House Children’s Home began as a means of meeting the extensive needs of the street children of Recife, Brazil. Out of that program, Hope House Children’s Home was born. Hope House can best be described by the story of Arlan José da Cruz Silva. Arlan was born on October 18,1993. He comes from a very poor family. They lived in Coqui, which is one of the most dangerous slums in Recife. He doesn’t know his parents. He doesn’t even know their names. Since he was a baby, he was raised by his grandmother. He grew up spending the day on the streets and going home at night to sleep. He became involved in stealing and sniffing glue. When Arlan was nine years old, he was with his grandmother at the metro and she became very sick, fell to the ground and died. He witnessed the death of the only person who ever took care of him. After the death of his grandmother he went to live with his cousin who had two children. Arlan had come to know Hope House through one of their projects in the slum where he lived. He was invited to participate in a retreat at the orphanage. Soon after he was asked to do a program at the house. After 15 days in the program he came to live at Hope House. He has been there for two years now and considers this his home. Hope House Children's Home has a two-fold purpose: 1) to rescue and restore children and adults who live on the streets and 2) to take preventive measures by helping in needy communities through life-skills training, social assistance, education and reconciliation programs in Brazil and other nations. Working together with the sponsoring organizations, Hope House offers on-location training, assistance and service opportunities. Return to Projects |
