Refuge House AIDS Home - Brazil Hope House Children’s Home began as a means of meeting the extensive needs of the street children of Recife, Brazil. Hope House can best be described by sharing the story of Arlan. He was born in 1993. He came from a very poor family and lived in one of the most dangerous slums in Recife. From infancy he was raised by his grandmother and grew up spending his days on the streets. He became involved in sniffing glue and stealing to survive. When Arlan was nine years old, he was with his grandmother at the metro when she became very sick, fell to the ground and died. He witnessed the death of the only person who had ever taken care of him. Arlan came to know about Hope House through one of their projects in the slum where he lived. He was invited to participate in a retreat at the orphanage and he eventually came to live at Hope House. He has been there for two years now and considers it his home. Giving kids a safe place to call home is the desire of the staff of Hope House. Hope House Children's Home has a two-fold purpose: 1) to rescue and restore children and adults who live on the streets and 2) to take preventive measures to help needy communities through life-skills training, social assistance, education and other programs in Brazil and other nations. Working together with the sponsoring organizations, Hope House offers on-location training, assistance and service opportunities. Return to Projects |
