Siita Nest Homes - Jinja, Uganda

This home is led by a wonderful Ugandan woman named Alice Kisolo. This orphanage has 175 children in their Siita Nest homes. The main facility has 100 children in it, and they also have satellite homes with 5-10 children per home to provide a real "home" environment. Many of these homes incorporate widows as the house parents, which has a dual impact of providing parents for the children as well as providing a home for the widows who would otherwise live in poverty.
Siita Nest was founded through the experience of Alice's loss of family members that were infected with AIDS. In a period of one year, eight family members passed away leaving fourteen children behind. Alice Kisolo was suddenly faced with the challenge of caring for fourteen children.
Burdened, broken and overwhelmed with the plight of those children with no home or income, Alice stepped forward to take the responsibility of parenting these children.
In a couple of years, other children in the community also lost their parents and sought help. The local government recognized the outstanding care that had been offered for the other children and asked Alice and her friends to formally register and take care of more children. Today, Siita Nest cares for 275 children. In Uganda, over 2 million children have lost one or both parents due to AIDS in this nation alone. Also, in the Northern Region of Uganda, many parents have been killed due to the war that has raged there for over 20 years. Abandonment and family breakdown have also affected the family unit leaving the children on streets and very vulnerable. Since 2002, Siita Nest has given shelter, education, counseling, food, medical care and necessary life skills to many children at risk.
